Double Chance Bets Explained: A Smarter Way to Back Your Team

What a double chance bet is, when it makes sense, and how Naija Score uses it to lift the hit rate on our football predictions.

If you have ever backed a strong home side only to watch them draw and lose your ticket, the double chance market is worth understanding. It is one of the simplest ways to cut risk without leaving the match markets entirely.

What is a double chance bet?

A standard match result bet (1X2) asks you to pick one of three outcomes: home win (1), draw (X) or away win (2). A double chance bet lets you cover two of those three outcomes on a single selection:

  • 1X — home win or draw
  • 12 — home win or away win (anyone but a draw)
  • X2 — draw or away win

Because you are covering two outcomes, you win more often. The trade-off is a lower odd, since the bookmaker is taking on less risk.

When double chance makes sense

Double chance is not about being timid — it is about picking your spots:

  • A solid favourite that sometimes slips up. Backing them to win or draw (1X) protects you against the odd off day.
  • Tight games between evenly matched sides, where a draw is very much on the cards.
  • Away teams you fancy not to lose, where X2 gives you a result on a win or a draw.

How Naija Score uses it

A prediction model reads the outcome probabilities for every fixture and, instead of only naming the single most likely result, it can also derive the double chance that covers the two most probable outcomes. Covering two of three results is exactly why a double chance lands more often than a straight 1X2 pick — and every pick is still shown with its result on our results page (for now a backtest on 2023–24 matches).
