Both Teams to Score (BTTS): Predictions & Tips That Make Sense

Both teams to score tips for Nigerian punters — the signals that point to BTTS, stats worth checking, smart combos and mistakes to avoid.

5 min readBy Naija Score

Both teams to score (BTTS, sometimes shown as GG for “goal-goal”) is one of the most popular markets with Nigerian punters, and for good reason: you do not need to know who wins, only that both sides find the net. This guide covers the signals that genuinely point to a BTTS match, the stats worth checking before you stake, and the combinations and mistakes that decide whether the market works for you or against you.

How BTTS works (the 30-second version)

The bet is exactly what it says: BTTS Yes wins if both teams score at least one goal in regular time; BTTS No wins if either side (or both) fails to score. The final result is irrelevant — a 1-1 draw and a 4-1 thrashing both land BTTS Yes, while a 3-0 win lands BTTS No.

The signals that point to a BTTS match

Not every attacking fixture is a BTTS fixture. What you are really looking for is a match where both teams are likely to create and concede. The strongest signals:

  • Both teams score regularly — each side has found the net in most of its recent league games, home or away.
  • Both teams concede regularly — a leaky defence on both benches matters as much as the strikers.
  • Neither side keeps clean sheets — a team on a run of shutouts is BTTS poison, whatever its attack looks like.
  • Both teams need something. Two sides chasing points push forward and trade chances; a match one team can afford to lose often stays closed.
  • Open head-to-head history. Some fixtures produce end-to-end games year after year; others are traditionally cagey regardless of form.
  • Attacking full-backs and high lines. Teams that commit players forward score more and concede more — ideal BTTS material.

The reverse profile matters too: a dominant home favourite against a side parked behind the ball is often a great BTTS No spot, even when goals are expected — because they are only expected at one end.

The stats to check before you stake

You can evaluate a BTTS pick in five minutes with public data. Work through this list:

  1. BTTS percentage for both teams this season. Most stats pages show it directly. Two teams both landing BTTS in well over half their games is the baseline you want.
  2. Clean sheet rate for both teams. High clean-sheet teams kill BTTS Yes from either side of the ball.
  3. “Failed to score” rate. A team that regularly blanks — common with struggling away sides — is the single biggest BTTS Yes risk.
  4. Home/away splits specifically. A side that scores freely at home may barely register away; judge each team in the venue it will actually play.
  5. Team news. A missing main striker or a rested back four can flip the whole equation on match day.

League context sets the baseline for all of this. High-scoring European leagues produce plenty of BTTS matches, while the NPFL leans low-scoring — home teams dominate and away sides often set up purely to survive, which makes BTTS No the more natural angle in many Nigerian league games.

BTTS combos: where the value hides

Bookmakers offer BTTS combined with other markets, and used carefully these can express a precise opinion:

  • BTTS + Over 2.5. The natural pairing — if both teams score and you expect an open game, a third goal is often coming. The markets overlap heavily though, so learn what drives totals in our over 2.5 goals tips before doubling up on essentially the same opinion.
  • BTTS + result. “Home win and BTTS” pays far more than either bet alone, and suits games where you fancy a strong favourite that leaks — a 3-1 type of match.
  • BTTS in accumulators. Popular because odds around 1.60-2.00 stack quickly. Keep legs few and researched; five lazy BTTS legs is a donation, not a strategy.

Mistakes that quietly drain BTTS bankrolls

  • Betting the fixture’s reputation, not its form. “Big derby, both will score” ignores that derbies are often tight and nervous.
  • Ignoring the away team entirely. BTTS needs the weaker side to score too — check how it performs on the road, not just overall.
  • Assuming two good attacks guarantee GG. If one defence is elite, one team scoring three does not help you.
  • Chasing an early miss with live bets. A 0-0 at 60 minutes does not make BTTS Yes better value; the odds already reflect the dying clock.
  • Staking bigger because odds are short. Around 1.70-1.90 the market feels “safe” — it is not, and stakes should stay flat.

Our football predictions cover match-result and double-chance picks, each with its probability; we do not publish BTTS or goals-market picks yet. Our win/loss record is public (for now a backtest on 2023–24 matches), so you can judge the method before you follow it. More market breakdowns like this live in our predictions and tips hub.

FAQ

What does BTTS or GG mean in betting?

Both mean “both teams to score” — the bet wins if each side scores at least one goal in the match. GG is the shorthand used on many Nigerian betting slips; NG or “No Goal” means at least one team fails to score.

Does BTTS include extra time and penalties?

No. BTTS is settled on regular time (90 minutes plus stoppage). Goals in extra time or shootouts in cup matches do not count toward the bet.

Is BTTS Yes or No the better bet?

Neither is inherently better — it depends entirely on the match profile. Two leaky, in-form attacks favour Yes; a strong defensive favourite against a blunt away side favours No. In the NPFL, low away scoring makes No the more common value side.

An own goal was scored — does it count for BTTS?

Yes, but it is credited to the team that benefits, not the team whose player scored it. If Team A’s defender puts through his own net, that goal counts as Team B scoring.

What are typical BTTS odds?

Most competitive league matches price BTTS Yes somewhere between about 1.60 and 2.10, with No in a similar band on the other side. Compare a few bookmakers — the spread on BTTS lines varies more than most punters realise.
