Champions League Fixtures & Format: The League Phase Explained

Champions League fixtures made simple — how the 36-team league phase works, kickoff times in WAT, and how to follow every result from Nigeria.

6 min readBy Naija Score

If you have been trying to make sense of the new Champions League fixtures, you are not alone. Since UEFA scrapped the old group stage and moved to a 36-team league phase, plenty of Nigerian fans have been asking the same questions: why does my team play eight different opponents, who qualifies, and what time do matches kick off in West Africa Time? This guide explains the whole format in plain language, so the next time an argument starts at the viewing centre, you are the one settling it.

The old format vs the new league phase

For over two decades, the Champions League meant eight groups of four teams. You played six group games — home and away against three opponents — and the top two advanced. Simple, but predictable. The big clubs almost always cruised through, and by matchday five, half the fixtures meant nothing.

The new format changes everything:

FeatureOld group stageNew league phase
Number of teams3236
Structure8 groups of 4One single league table
Matches per team6 (3 opponents, home and away)8 (8 different opponents)
Direct qualificationTop 2 per groupTop 8 in the table
Second chance3rd place dropped to Europa LeaguePlaces 9–24 enter a knockout playoff
Eliminated4th placePlaces 25–36

So instead of a small group, every club now sits in one giant table of 36 teams. Everyone plays eight matches against eight different opponents, and your final position in that combined table decides your fate.

How the eight fixtures are decided

This is the part that confuses most people. Your club does not play everyone — it plays eight opponents drawn from four seeding pots. The draw itself has its own rules about pots, country protections and home-and-away balance, and we broke that down separately in our guide to the Champions League draw explained.

The short version:

  • The 36 clubs are split into four pots of nine, ranked by UEFA club coefficient.
  • Each club is drawn against two opponents from every pot — including its own pot.
  • One of each pair is played at home, the other away, so every club gets four home and four away fixtures.
  • Clubs from the same country cannot meet in the league phase.

The result is that a Pot 1 giant still has to face other Pot 1 giants, which is exactly what the old format avoided. Heavyweight clashes now happen in September instead of waiting for the quarter-finals.

What happens after the league phase

Once all eight matchdays are done, the single table decides everything:

  1. Positions 1–8 qualify directly for the round of 16 and are seeded in the knockout draw.
  2. Positions 9–24 go into a two-legged knockout playoff. The eight winners join the top eight in the round of 16.
  3. Positions 25–36 are eliminated from Europe entirely — there is no drop into the Europa League anymore.

That last point matters. Under the old system, finishing third in your group was a soft landing. Now, a bad league phase ends your European season completely, which is why even matchday eight fixtures between mid-table clubs carry real tension.

Champions League kickoff times in Nigeria (WAT)

Here is some good news for Nigerian fans: our time zone is friendly to the Champions League. West Africa Time (WAT) is UTC+1, the same base as Central European Time.

  • Early in the season (September–October), while Europe is on summer time, the two standard kickoffs land at roughly 5:45 PM and 8:00 PM WAT.
  • From late October onwards, when European clocks go back, those same slots shift to about 6:45 PM and 9:00 PM WAT.

Either way, midweek Champions League nights in Nigeria are evening viewing — no 2 AM alarms like fans of South American football deal with. Tuesday and Wednesday are the main league phase nights, with the odd Thursday used when the calendar gets crowded.

For TV, SuperSport carries the Champions League across DStv and GOtv in Nigeria. Check your package and the SuperSport schedule on matchday, because match allocation across channels changes from week to week.

The Nigerian angle: who to watch

The league phase means more matches, more clubs, and more chances to watch Nigerian internationals on the biggest stage. Victor Osimhen remains the headline act whenever his club is in the competition — a striker built for these nights. Ademola Lookman, a Europa League final hero in 2024, has shown he can decide continental matches on his own. And with 36 clubs qualifying rather than 32, the pool of Super Eagles regulars — the likes of Frank Onyeka and others across Europe’s leagues — appearing in the competition keeps growing.

Following eight matchdays across 18 fixtures per round is genuinely hard on a busy schedule. A live-score app or SuperSport gives you scores and the combined league-phase table as they happen. Our results page shows 2023–24 match data for now, which was the old group-stage format, so it is useful for history rather than for the current table.

Why the new format is good for neutral fans

Honest take: the new Champions League fixtures list is better for neutrals, and it is not close.

  • Big clashes come early. Pot 1 teams must play each other in the league phase, so you get heavyweight fixtures in autumn.
  • More jeopardy at the bottom. No Europa League parachute means clubs fight for every point through matchday eight.
  • The table tells a story. One combined standings table is easier to argue about than eight separate groups — and you can follow it in any live-score app. Our standings page shows the 2023–24 group-stage tables (the old format) alongside the Premier League and La Liga.
  • More football, full stop. Eight games instead of six, and 36 clubs instead of 32.

The criticism — that it adds fixtures to an already packed calendar — is fair. But from a fan’s couch in Lagos or Abuja, more elite midweek football at friendly WAT hours is hard to complain about. FAQ

How many matches does each team play in the Champions League league phase?

Eight matches against eight different opponents — four at home and four away. That replaces the old six-game group stage. All 36 teams sit in one combined table.

What time do Champions League matches start in Nigeria?

The two standard slots are roughly 5:45 PM and 8:00 PM WAT early in the season, moving to 6:45 PM and 9:00 PM WAT once European clocks change in late October.

Do teams still drop into the Europa League if they finish third?

No. That safety net is gone. Teams finishing 25th to 36th in the league phase are out of Europe completely, while 9th to 24th get a knockout playoff for the round of 16.

Where can I watch the Champions League in Nigeria?

SuperSport holds the rights in Nigeria, available through DStv and GOtv packages. Channel allocation varies by matchday, so check the SuperSport schedule — and use a live-score app if you cannot get to a screen.

Who qualifies directly for the round of 16?

Only the top eight teams in the league phase table. Everyone from 9th to 24th must survive a two-legged playoff first, which makes final-matchday fixtures far more meaningful than under the old format.
