The NPFL Explained: A Beginner's Guide to the Nigeria Premier Football League

How the Nigeria Premier Football League works: format, points and tiebreakers, continental places, relegation, the big clubs, how to read the table and why the NPFL is worth following.

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is the top tier of club football in Nigeria. If you follow the Premier League or La Liga but have never given the local game a proper look, here is what you are missing, how the league works, and how to read its table so that the standings tell you something useful.

How the league works

The NPFL is contested by top-flight clubs from across the country, who play each other home and away over a full season. In the 2025/26 season, 20 clubs played 38 matches each (19 at home and 19 away), from 22 August 2025 to 24 May 2026, according to reports by AllAfrica and Radio Nigeria. Check the league’s official channels for the 2026/27 calendar and any change of format.

Teams earn:

  • 3 points for a win
  • 1 point for a draw
  • 0 points for a loss

The table ranks clubs by total points. When clubs finish level, the league’s competition rules decide the order. Common practice in leagues like this is goal difference first, then goals scored, then results between the tied clubs, but we have not checked the NPFL rulebook for this guide, so confirm the exact order with the league before you rely on it.

The four races inside one table

An NPFL table is really four races stacked on top of each other.

  1. The title. The champions lift the trophy and normally take Nigeria’s place in the CAF Champions League, Africa’s biggest club competition. Enyimba, twice champions of Africa, built their legend from exactly this position. On the final day of 2025/26 (24 May 2026), Enugu Rangers won their ninth league title, level with Enyimba as the most successful clubs in the league’s history, according to Radio Nigeria.
  2. Continental places. Below the champions, the next clubs in the table can qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup. CAF sets how many places Nigeria gets each season, so check the current allocation instead of assuming a number.
  3. Mid-table. Safety plus pride. Clubs here often play with freedom late in the season and become awkward opponents.
  4. The relegation zone. The bottom clubs drop into the Nigeria National League (NNL), and the best NNL clubs come up to replace them. Relegation is brutal financially, which is why clubs in the drop zone fight so hard, especially at home.

How to read the table properly

Goal difference matters more here than in Europe. Nigerian top-flight matches usually produce fewer goals than Premier League matches, so gaps in goal difference stay narrow. A single 3-0 win can move a club several places, and a title or relegation fight can come down to one extra goal.

Overall position can hide split form. Home advantage in the NPFL is strong. Long road trips, passionate home crowds and unfamiliar pitches mean home teams win a large share of matches while away wins are rare. So:

  • A mid-table club may be near-perfect at home and hopeless on the road. Its position looks average; its home fixtures are anything but.
  • A club on a “bad run” may simply have played four straight away games. Check the fixture sequence before judging form.
  • Grinding out draws on the road is title-winning form in this league.

The same table means different things in different months:

StageHow to read it
First 5-6 matchdaysIgnore panic. Fixture difficulty is uneven and one postponed game distorts everything. Look at performances, not positions.
Mid-seasonThe table starts telling the truth. Gaps of 6 points or more become meaningful.
Run-inStudy remaining fixtures, not just points. A club two points ahead with three away trips left may be behind in the real race.

Always check matches played. Postponed or rescheduled games can leave clubs with games in hand, so points alone can mislead.

Common mistakes when reading NPFL standings

  • Comparing two clubs who have played a different number of matches.
  • Judging a club’s form from its overall position instead of its home and away records.
  • Trusting an old screenshot. A table is out of date by midweek, so use a source that is clearly dated.
  • Ignoring goal difference when two clubs are level on points.

The clubs to know

Nigerian club football has deep regional rivalries and passionate support. Names like Rivers United, Enyimba, Kano Pillars, Enugu Rangers (Rangers International) and Remo Stars carry real history and pull big crowds. Enyimba are among the most decorated clubs in African competition.

Why the NPFL is worth following

  • Unpredictability. Home advantage is strong and results swing more than in the established European leagues, which makes the league genuinely exciting.
  • Local talent. The NPFL is where many future stars of the Super Eagles and Europe’s leagues are first spotted.
  • Value for followers. Because it gets less mainstream coverage, fans who study form and team news have a real edge in understanding matches.
  • Low scoring. Results such as 1-0 and 0-0 are normal, not a sign that something is wrong with the match or the feed. That is why one goal swings so much.

How to follow it without wasting data

Most NPFL fixtures kick off on weekend afternoons, and many games in a round start at the same hour, so results arrive in a burst. One check at kickoff, one at half-time and one at full-time is enough. Where to look: the league’s official channels, club accounts, radio commentary, and our NPFL results guide.
