In most, goal difference comes first: score more and concede less across the season and you rank higher. This is why a heavy defeat late in a season can hurt so much: it is not just three points lost, it can be goal difference surrendered that costs a title or a European place on the final day. Reading the table with tie-breakers in mind tells you how much is really at stake in each remaining fixture.
