Football league tables

A league table is the clearest picture of a season.

On Naija Score you get the NPFL table for the Nigeria Premier Football League alongside the Premier League table, the La Liga table and the Champions League standings — all in one place, labelled with the season the data comes from. Switch competitions with the filter above and read the story of the season at a glance.

Each row shows a team's position and their full record: matches played, won, drawn and lost, goals for and against, and total points. It is the same information whether you follow Enyimba in the NPFL or your favourite side in Europe — and it loads fast on any phone, on little data.

How to read the table

Every column tells you something. Here is what each one means:

  • # — the team's current position in the league.
  • P — matches played.
  • W / D / L — wins, draws and losses.
  • GF / GA — goals for (scored) and goals against (conceded).
  • Pts — total points: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss.

When two teams are level on points, goal difference (GF minus GA) usually decides who ranks higher. The top of the table is the title race; the bottom is the relegation fight. Both are decided by these same numbers over a full season.

A season in four moments

The title race and the relegation fight

Scroll through an example season and watch the rows move — points first, then goal difference.

  1. Matchday one: everyone on zero

Every season starts level. The table is just a list of teams — no points yet.

  2. The pack separates

Three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a loss. By mid-season the rows have moved and the real order starts to show.

  3. Title race and drop zone light up

The top is the race for the trophy; the bottom is the fight to stay up. Both are decided by the same numbers.

  4. Final day: goal difference decides

Two teams finish level on points. Goal difference — goals scored minus goals conceded — puts one above the other.

Two stories play out in every table at once. At the top, a handful of teams chase the trophy, and by the closing weeks a single point — or goal difference — can separate champions from runners-up.

At the bottom, the relegation fight is just as tense: the Nigeria Premier Football League, like the Premier League and La Liga, sends its lowest-placed sides down and brings up teams from the division below. Mid-table clubs, meanwhile, play for pride, momentum and a strong finish to build on next season.

Every one of those battles is decided by the same simple maths — points first, then goal difference. Read it here, then head to our predictions and results pages to see how the next round of fixtures could move the table again.

Why the league table matters

Form comes and goes, but the table is the truth of a season.

It rewards consistency over a single lucky result: forty points earned across thirty-odd matches is a far better measure of a team than one big win. For fans, it settles the arguments — who is really top, who is in trouble, and how far your club is from where you want them to be. For anyone following predictions, the table is a signal too: a side climbing the standings on a run of clean sheets is telling you something about the fixtures ahead.

That is why we keep the NPFL table and the European standings side by side. Whether you are tracking the title race at the top or the relegation battle at the bottom, the table shown today is historical (2023–24 season data) and is labelled as such.

The leagues we cover, in detail

NPFL (Nigeria Premier Football League). The heartbeat of Nigerian club football, home to storied names like Enyimba, Rangers and Kano Pillars.

The NPFL table is where promotion dreams and relegation nerves live, and it is the coverage we care about most — because it is the league on your doorstep, and the one most international sites ignore. Follow the standings here and read our NPFL explainer if you are new to it.

English Premier League. Nigeria's most-watched foreign league by a distance. Every weekend, viewing centres fill up and the Premier League table becomes national conversation. From the title race to the fight for Europe and survival, the standings tell the story — and our season preview sets the scene.

La Liga. Spain's top flight, where technical football and heavyweight clubs keep Nigerian fans up late. The La Liga table often comes down to a two- or three-horse race, and goal difference frequently has the final word.

UEFA Champions League. Europe's biggest midweek nights. The group-stage tables decide who advances to the knockouts, so every point matters. It is the competition that crowns the continent's best — and we keep the standings within easy reach.

Tie-breakers: what happens when teams are level

Points are only the first cut. When two or more teams finish level on points, leagues turn to tie-breakers to separate them — and the rules vary by competition.

In most, goal difference comes first: score more and concede less across the season and you rank higher. If that is still level, total goals scored often decides, and after that head-to-head records between the tied teams may come into play. In the Champions League group stage, head-to-head results carry extra weight compared with the domestic leagues.

This is why a heavy defeat late in a season can hurt so much: it is not just three points lost, it can be goal difference surrendered that costs a title or a European place on the final day. Reading the table with tie-breakers in mind tells you how much is really at stake in each remaining fixture.

Following your club through a full season

A season is a marathon.

Early tables can mislead — a fast start or a slow one rarely lasts — but by the midway point the standings usually reflect the real strength of each side. Watching your club's line move week to week, matchday by matchday, is part of the pleasure: a run of wins climbing the table, a wobble that lets rivals close in, the tense final weeks when everything is decided.

Keep this page bookmarked and check back after each round. Pair it with our match results to see results as they land and our predictions for what might come next, and you have the full picture of the season in one place — built for Nigeria, light on data.

FAQ

League tables — FAQ

Where can I see the NPFL table in Nigeria?

Right here. Naija Score publishes the Nigeria Premier Football League table — position, played, won, drawn, lost, goal difference and points — next to the Premier League, La Liga and Champions League tables.

How do football league table points work?

A win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 point and a loss 0. Teams are ranked by total points; when points are level, goal difference (goals scored minus conceded) usually decides who is higher.

What do P, W, D, L, GF, GA and Pts mean?

P is matches played, W wins, D draws, L losses, GF goals for (scored), GA goals against (conceded), and Pts total points. GD (goal difference) is GF minus GA.

How often is the league table updated?

The tables shown today are historical (2023–24 season data). Live tables return when live data is switched on.

Which league tables does Naija Score cover?

The NPFL (Nigeria), the English Premier League, Spain’s La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. Use the filter to switch between them.

How does promotion and relegation work in the NPFL?

As in most leagues, the teams at the bottom of the table are relegated to the lower division at season’s end, while top sides from below are promoted. The table is where that battle plays out.

What is goal difference and why does it matter?

Goal difference (GD) is goals scored minus goals conceded. When teams finish level on points, GD usually decides who ranks higher — so a heavy win or loss can shift a title race or a European spot on the final day.

Do the tables include the NPFL and European leagues together?

Yes. You can switch between the NPFL, Premier League, La Liga and Champions League tables using the filter, all in one place.
